Several major defence systems are based on the Crimson software solution, whose groundbreaking capabilities offer a significant added value: a highly intuitive User eXperience for quick appropriation, which is essential given the turnover within the various joint warfare services; and adaptability to allow seamless interoperation with heterogeneous and legacy third-party information systems.
Also worth mentioning is the ability to easily acquire the sofware via the French purchasing platform Ouranos launched by the Joint Directorate of Intrastructure Networks and Information Systems (DIRISI) of the French Armed Forces.
Integrated System for Site Protection (SIPS)
Back in 2019, Crimson Sentinel first won the French MoD's Defence Innovation Agency (DIA) prize of the most advanced system for the surveillance and protection of sensitive sites. The solution has then been put in competition against 15 other international competitiors by the French MoD during approximatively one year on various use cases before being finally selected as the most promising system for its SIPS programme.. Considering the critical aspect of this programme, and before launching its complete deployment, the French MoD installed and evaluated Crimson on 2 French military bases. This last validation phase confirmed both the relevance and performance of Crimson connected to numerous legacy subsystem (access control, intrusion detection, video surveillance, handheld alert system ("RAF") and myriads of sensors, private LTE...) and the fact that operationals consider it as a major advance to handle critical site protection and defence operations. This major success triggered the lauch of the complete SIPS programme.
Control centre for Combat Training Center for Military Operations on Urban Terrain (CERBERE)
In the context of modernizing the army's training centers, the CERBERE program aims to enable units to train and be evaluated in conditions very close to reality (combat frictions, weapon effects). This program replicates all combat capabilities offered by SCORPION and new armaments, up to the scale of a GTIA (combined arms tactical group) including three SGTIA (subgroupings combined arms).
CERBERE equips the CENTAC (Mailly-le-Camp Combat Training Center - open area) and the CENZUB, the Urban Zone Action Training Center located in a mock city equivalent to 300 buildings, capable of hosting 5,000 inhabitants and fully instrumented.
The deployed system allows for the training of 2,400 infantry soldiers with their equipment and vehicles, and the control of SGTIA-level units in conditions close to reality, especially for SCORPION units. CERBERE enables
- The creation, management, real-time monitoring, and high-value debriefing (video, etc.) of exercices,
- the instrumentation of the terrain (sensors in all rooms, etc.) and participants to track each individual/vehicle (position, health status, etc.),
- the incorporation of new weapons (IED, grenades, etc.), and the enhancement of information.
In this project, CS Group provided Thales with the Operational Center of the solution, along with instructor tablets for the field, allowing for the supervision, exercice control and direction (ExCon), and debriefing of exercises. Based on Crimson technology and the digital twin concept of the terrain, this system offers unique capabilities for scenario creation and exercise animation, integrating sensor data in real-time into a 2D or 3D visualization of the operational theater, both indoors and outdoors, while enabling control of all effectors. The sensors cover the entire localization systems of infantry, their vehicles, weapons, as well as several hundred cameras. The effectors include around 1,000 loudspeakers and 700 smoke generators for sound and visual effects, both inside and outside urban infrastructures..
Strategic games at the Centre for Doctrine and Command Education (CDEC)
The Crimson Sandbox solution was selected and used, for the first time, in a strategic training exercise conducted by the French CGSC under the auspices of the CDEC. The plateform allowed for a seamless rendering of the pawn moves onto a 3D, online mapping support, the comparison of strategies between players and shared situational awareness at various levels of command. The participants have familiarised themselves with the solution rapidly, and taken advantage of its replay capabilities, an added bonus from a teaching perspective.
Strategic games at the Centre for the Planning and Conduct of Operations (CPCO)
To promote these strategic workshops' drive for innovation and digitisation, which have been played out as board games up until now, the Innovation Defence Lab has selected Crimson Sandbox. The solution has been adapted to its planning purpose and to ensure an optimised end-user experience.
Crimson Sandbox was used successfully during the "2020 Global Games" held under the high patronage of the Chief of Defence (CHOD). Besides the screening of the Concept of Operations (CONOPS) and the execution of strategic scenarios, the solution has resulted in greater interactivity between players, despite their remote access in the difficult context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
